Benefits of Partial Truckload Shipping

Partial Truckload Shipping plays a major role in the transportation logistics industry and in this article, Millennium Logistics Management will discuss the many benefits we can experience from this type of service.

But, what is partial truckload shipping? Let’s us first explain what this means:

Partial truckload, also known as volume LTL (which stands for less than truckload), is a system that shippers who are looking for faster transport times, lower costs and less handling use.

The exact amount of freight needed for a partial truckload shipment depends on the weight, linear feet and service requirements. For example, when a shipper whose freight is less than a full truckload but more than an LTL shipment, they use partial truckload shipments. Partial truckload shipments are generally between 10 to 16 pallets and can weigh anywhere from 7,000 to 25,000 pounds.

Now, what are some of the benefits of Partial Truckload Shipping? Let’s break this up into two sections; cost savings and better service:

Cost Savings

  • With partial truckload shipping, no freight class is required.
  • Generally, partial truckload shippers find discounted rates.
  • Partial truckload shipment costs are determined by the number of linear feet the freight takes up.
  • Shippers pay for what they use; there are no surprise accessorial or transportation fees.

Better Service

  • Less damage.
  • Freight ships on one truck.
  • The percentage of on-time delivery increases with less stops.
  • Freight is touched less because partial truckloads move through less terminals.

Why should you consider Partial Truckload Shipping?

You may want to consider using Partial Truckload Shipping if you don’t have enough freight to fill an entire truck but still want the benefits that come with traditional truckload shipping; it is a great alternative!

Shippers with low density freight and time-sensitive freight benefit the most using partial truckload shipping. This is because during the partial truckload shipping haul, other freight is combined on the truck, without the truck having to make as many stops as an LTL haul.
